What are the differences between D and gear 2 and 3 in an automatic car?

i dont really know much about cars . Yesterday my friend told me that a car would drag faster if i would to shift the gear to 2 first and then to 3 and followed by D . Is tat even true? i havent tried it out though cause i am afraid the gear would break or sumthing.
